The Outback Is Getting Its Own Indigenous Light Festival

Contemporary and traditional Indigenous art will light up Alice Springs this year with a bold light display that celebrates the world’s oldest continuing culture.

Parrtjima – A Festival Of Light will illuminate Alice Springs from September 23 to October 2 for ten nights of light and sound. The event is the first of its kind in the world, bringing together the oldest continuing culture on earth, the newest technology and the 300-million-year old canvas of the mighty MacDonnell Ranges. All signs point to it being spectacular.

The event was created in partnership with local Aboriginal artists and will feature three distinct installations of original work created by the artists, students and the community. Notable artists include senior Western Arrarnta-Luritja artist Hubert Pareroultja, Western Arrarnta artist Lenie Namatjira and Therese Ryder, an Alice Springs artist who belongs to the Eastern Arrente language group.

Parrtjima, which takes its name from the Arrernte word ‘Parrtma’ meaning ‘light up’, has been working in close collaboration with the local artists and AGB Events, known for their work at Vivid Sydney. The venue will be just a ten minute drive from town at the Alice Springs Desert Park, and more than 2.5km of the MacDonnell Ranges will provide the natural canvas for the event.
