The 7 Best Things To Do In Melbourne This October

The weather is finally warming up and if there’s one thing Melburnians are good at it’s finding a patch of sun, and a reason – or seven – to be out in it. Kicking off with a long weekend, this month is set to be glorious one with a whole heaps of great things going on. From doggy gatherings to feminist festivals, and of course, the best places to catch the AFL Grand Final, here are our picks for the best happenings this October.

Dogapalooza is back

Dubbed Melbourne’s first dog-friendly music festival, last year’s sold-out Dogapalooza was a thing of puppy-loving beauty. Alongside the tunes and tails, there’s also a number of delicious food trucks, events for dogs, and animal-friendly chow. Better yet? All proceeds from the festival go to a number of pooch-friendly charities. This year, Dogapalooza is taking place in Burnley Park in Richmond on October 9. Don’t miss the social event of the season. Head here to purchase your tickets.

A huge Banksy exhibition

While The Art of Banksy can claim no involvement from the artist himself, it will still feature more than 80 works owned by private collectors from around the world – including a number of pieces that have never been publicly displayed. The exhibition is on from noon-8pm at The Paddock in Federation Square from October 7 to January 22. Tickets to The Art of Banksy are on sale now via Ticketek.

The many sides of Melbourne Festival

With a new director in tow, this year’s Melbourne Festival is quite literally taking over the streets. Alongside some artistic tram takeovers, there’s an emphasis on the world around us as art. Once again, the festival will encompass countless venues around town, including the always-fun MPavillion. Head to the Toff in Town – which will stay open late and provide priority access to festival ticket holders – to finish off your night with a cocktail and a nibble from the sharable Thai menu. For a full list of events and programs head to their Melbourne Festival website.

Time to don your lederhosen and indulge in some liquid gluten! Oktoberfest in the Gardens features two massive beer halls, German food stalls, roving performers, a sideshow alley, a silent disco and an eclectic mix of entertainment and competitions held across multiple stages, all playing out over two afternoons and evenings. This year it’s happening on Saturday October 22 and Sunday 23 at Birrarung Marr in the CBD. Pre-purchase your tickets here.

The big dance

Melbourne is great for so many reasons: not least because a public holiday is given to Victorians just because their love of footy is that strong. Getting a ticket to the game is a tough ask, but pretty much every pub in the state will be showing the showdown between the Sydney Swans and the Western Bulldogs. For something extra special, head to Federation Square to watch the game on the big screen and for some good old fashioned camaraderie. Taking place on Saturday October 1, there’s probably no better way to kick off the month. GO DOGGIES!

The 39th annual Spring Fling Street Festival is on its way, so be sure to tram, train, ride or stroll over to historic Errol Street in North Melbourne, which comes alive with pop up markets, street food, beer gardens, entertainment, and the always adorable Spring Fling Dog Show. The aim of the event is to connect, collaborate with and celebrate Melbourne’s vibrant inner-city communities, and what better way to do this than with a bit of sunshine and some good tunes? It’s taking place on Saturday October 15 and Sunday 16.
