Salads Disguised As Cakes Are A Thing In Japan Now

The great man Homer Simpson once said that you “don’t make friends with salad”. Well, apparently Homer hasn’t seen Japan’s latest food craze.
You can now have your cake and eat it too – guilt free this time. These decadent-looking creations come to us from Vegedeco Salad, a new cafe in Sakae, Nagoya who specialise in salads that take the form of delicious cakes. And I never thought I’d say this, but they look good.
The mastermind behind Vegedeco is Mitsuki Moriyasu, a Japanese food designer who focusses his efforts on combining health and beauty. They’re billing Vegedeco as a “new shape of salad” that’s both fun to look at and fun to eat. You’ll get all your regular salad ingredients – including cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage and more – mysteriously hidden in elaborate looking sponge cakes.

Moriyasu hides fruits and vegetables within the layers of the ‘sponge cake’, which is actually made from soybean. The frosting is a lie as well – it’s just a mixture of cream cheese and tofu, with vegetables used for colouring. Vegetables! How dare they.
For the sweet tooths out there, be warned – though Vegedeco are experts at making salads that look like cake, they haven’t decided to make any cakes that look like salads. So, unfortunately, you won’t be finding any desserts on their menu.
You’ll just have to settle for these cakes. I mean salads. No, cake. Or is it a salad? Oh boy…
