Melbourne’s Getting An Inner City Park On A Rooftop

Living in the inner-city sure has its perks – you have access to a plethora of art, culture and entertainment, you’re always across every cool new restaurant opening, and there’s a sense of fun and flurry to everything you do. It’s great! But as much as we hate to admit it, there are a few downsides to the urban lifestyle: seemingly endless queues, coexisting with a couple hundred thousand others, and probably most importantly, never really having a place to kick back and enjoy some fresh air.

Escaping the busy metropolis, even if it’s just for a few hours, is proven to improve your mental health and overall wellbeing. It’s even sadder when you learn that city slickers who don’t have access to parks, gardens or other green spaces could be living in a greater sense of mental distress. Lucky for the inhabitants of Melbourne as they’re about to get their very own skypark, right in the heart of the CBD. So Melbourne, right?

So you might be wondering, what exactly is a skypark? Situated above Collins Street in the CBD’s south-west, the Melbourne Skypark will be like an elevated green oasis, the first of its kind accessible to the public. It’s similar to The High Line in New York City, as well as that projected community space in the heart of Singapore.

The 2000 square metre public park will overlook Southern Cross Station and be bordered by Flinders Street in the south and Collins Street in the north.

It will be nestled right between a few swanky new skyscrapers, which are all part of a new development called the Melbourne Quarter. This new precinct, which is set to be completed by 2018, will include office spaces, shops and apartment buildings. Over half of the Melbourne Quarter has been dedicated to public space, which can be visited by anyone in the area; residents, workers and travellers alike.

The Skypark will be filled to the brim with greenery, and will also function as an outdoor recreation area. Sounds to us like a pretty perfect spot to relax amidst all the hustle and bustle, hey?
