These All-Glass Igloos Are The Only Way To See The Northern Lights

Levin Iglut, Finland

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again – the Northern Lights are next-level incredible. They’re one of those natural phenomenons you’ve just got to see in person to truly appreciate.

And while there are plenty of great vantage points from which to witness the astronomical spectacle, there’s one that puts all others to shame: Levin Iglut offers the best igloo experience in Finnish Lapland, in the country’s north.

Because of its location, Lapland experiences six-month-long winters, which means optimal conditions for viewing the Northern Lights. And because it’s located far away from populated areas, the skies are among the clearest in the world.

The igloos are made from an all-glass exterior, offering uninterrupted views of the Northern Lights and surrounding winter wonderland. Besides a nice and warm place to watch the lights, each igloo is kitted out with the comforts of home, including a kitchen, bathroom and Wi-Fi, and is big enough to house four guests.

While it may look like a supernatural event, the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, occurs when charged particles from the sun strike atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing electrons in the atoms to move to a higher-energy state.

When the electrons drop back to a lower energy state, they release a photon, or light beam, creating the spectacle.

If you’re game enough to brave the cold, there are tonnes of winter activities to enjoy, too, like sleighing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Levin Iglut is also close to a bunch of resorts if you’re hungry or keen for a spa day.

Prices start at $1000 per night, and igloos can be booked via the website.
