I’ve been lucky enough to travel a bunch over the past few years, and while each country I’ve visited is always different, there’s one thing that always stays the same: the dreaded airport run at the crack of dawn.
I envy those who can roll up to the airport at the last second, because I’m usually there far too early and panicking about missing my flight. So, I was intrigued when I heard about Moxy Sydney Airport – a hotel that happens to be close to the airport, as well as being a gateway to the rest of the bustling city.
Plus, they’ve got a super cute (and convenient) pink airport shuttle available for your convenience. Moxy is fun, vibrant and modern, and has activities for all types of travellers.
It’s located in Mascot, which means you can pop over to Alexandria to check out Rocks Brewing Co, a family-run, Australian brewery bar, or my favourite, Yullis Brews. There’s fun for the whole family (or those kids at heart, like me) at Hijinx Hotel, which is an immersive game experience with giant ball pits and puzzles. There’s also an epic mini-golf course at Holey Moley, and you can head to The Grounds of Alexandria for a quick bite.
It’s the perfect way to enjoy a slice of Sydney life – something that’s different from the iconic Sydney landmarks.
I went to check it out, and I was genuinely impressed from the moment I entered the hotel. Whether you’re looking for a night in with a face mask, or you’d prefer to try some delish cocktails at the bar, Moxy has you covered.
The lobby mimics the feel of a sweeping Brooklyn loft, with high ceilings and a number of cosy spaces to check out. The industrial feel also seems to take inspiration from the local area of Mascot, which is a fun nod. The Elliott Routledge mural over the brick wall is striking, and I loved how it wrapped around the building.
I was handed a delicious Moxy welcome cocktail after checking in at the bar, and soon wandered over to the Arthouse. It’s a modern space with a bunch of comfy seating, filled with natural light and, of course, some carefully curated art pieces.
For those looking for some excitement, there’s also a bunch of games on offer – including skeeball and giant Jenga – as well as a cute 1970s-styled photo booth. Hidden in the corner of the building is the Record Room, where you can play a game of ping pong while listening to some tunes. There’s some gems to search through, and I was stoked to find a classic Eurythmics LP in the collection.
Moxy’s greatest strength comes in the form of its bar and lobby space. It’s not a boring, soulless hotel – instead, it’s an area that you can gladly spend hours in. One of my fave places was the snug fireplace nook. Grab a drink from the bar, and you’ll instantly be transported into holiday mode.
The menu is extensive, with daily sandwiches and wraps to-go, a selection of pastries and toasties from their Little Baxter cafe (along with some much-needed coffee) and delish pita pockets and bar snacks at Bar Moxy. If there’s one dish you have to try while staying at Moxy, it’s the doughnut fries topped with butterscotch sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. I’m not lying when I say I’ll dream about that dessert forever.
I decided to head up to my room and check out some of the amenities on the way. The entire hotel’s style is cohesive and surprisingly, I really loved the elevators. I know, it’s not something I’d usually bother writing about, but they’re made from old shipping containers and really captured the industrial, modern feel.
A quick peek at the gym revealed that Barbie-mania is still alive and well, with an iconic pink Moxy punching bag in the middle. It’s one of the most aesthetically pleasing (yet extremely functional) gyms I’ve seen, so if you’re the type to work out on holiday, it ticks all the boxes. There’s also a laundry room, where guests can help themselves to towels, soap and toilet paper. It’s refreshing to see a hotel that’s environmentally conscious, and personally, I love being able to grab what I need without having to ask a staff member.
Moxy Sydney Airport’s rooms have a similar industrial, modern and clean style, along with some super comfy beds. In the Queen Sleeper room, there’s a feature sink in the hallway which acts as both a design and practical feature. I was impressed by the artistic flair throughout, including a hero piece of Evi-O.Studio art that elevated the room.
One thing I’m always on the lookout for in a hotel is the use of space and storage, and these rooms didn’t disappoint. There’s a drawer underneath the bed, foldout furniture on a peg wall to be used when needed (and is easily stored away when not in use), plus the HDTV is mounted to the wall. They’ve also got a number of room configurations, including bunkbeds or the Moxy Loft, which is perfect for small families or groups of friends. The high ceilings allow a single bed to sit above the King or Queen bed to maximise space.
The hotel is also perfect for business travellers. Forget about your usual, well, boring, meeting rooms, and step inside one of Moxy’s five spaces – perfect for meetings or conferences. They’re equipped with all the usual audio and visual equipment, but are carefully styled and full of character.
Moxy Sydney Airport has only just opened, and the rooms are a steal from $209 per night. The Moxy Madness package includes a welcome cocktail, buffet breakfast, late checkout at 3pm the next day, a return airport shuttle, 2,000 bonus Marriott points and a complimentary room upgrade.
I was so pleased to find that Moxy’s flexible room arrangements work for whoever I’m travelling with, whether it’s a group of girlfriends or my husband. With such a prime location and array of offerings, I’m sure the rooms are going to be snapped up quickly.
