Stargaze ‘Til Your Heart’s Content At India’s First Astronomy-Themed Hotel
While enjoying astronomy’s spoils can be difficult in busy cities, where the skies are cloudy and polluted by lights, there are plenty of remote locations around the world (and right here at home) where stargazing is a truly otherworldly experience.
An astronomy-themed hotel in India has opened to allow guests to stargaze in a location that was practically made for the job.
The hotel, called Astroport Sariska, is the first of its kind in India. Located in the wilderness northwest of Rajasthan, more than five hours away from New Delhi, it’s far removed from India’s bustling major cities. Guests sleep in large tents (complete with beds and other amenities), costing between $235 (INR12,000) and $395 (INR20,000) per night.
The hotel offers guests hiking and safaris during the day, but it’s at night that things really come life in the form of full, uninterrupted views of the Milky Way. The hotel even provides guests with telescopes and workshops where they can learn about identifying constellations, for those interested in learning more about astronomy.
Though it’s the first stargazing hotel in India, the concept of “astrotourism” has taken off around the world, with similar locations in Mexico and Italy, among others, while a bubble hotel in Iceland offers guests full views of the Northern Lights.
