Check Out Antarctica’s Only 5-Star Hotel

Rug up, because we’re about to take you on a picturesque tour of the world’s most isolated hotel, which also happens to be one of the most spectacular.

Our icy neighbour Antarctica is slowly but surely becoming more accessible for tourism, finding its place on the bucket lists of nature nerds, science lovers and celebs (looking at you, Prince Harry). With this trend in mind, it’s surprising that Antarctica’s only five-star hotel is far from being a new venture.

The White Desert Camp was constructed over 10-years ago as a temporary base for scientists and researchers. But thanks to a couple of design-eyed entrepreneurial polar explorers, it’s gone through a meticulous five-star make-over.

The hotel has six fibreglass domes or “sleeping pods” making room for up to 12 guests at a time. Inside, the pods have been designed with a warm and cosy feel, contradicting the harsh landscapes outside. Think leather couches, fur rugs and finishings of brass and crystal.

Before we get swept up in the luxury and elegance of the hotel itself, let’s not forget the backdrop is by far the main attraction. Antarctica is like no other place on earth, and the remarkable nature will take your breath away. We’ll let the pictures do the talking.

You can feel good about your stay at White Desert. The hotel adheres to a strict “zero impact” environment policy, it’s solo-powered and carbon-neural, with waste being flown back to South Africa on regular flights.

Of course, an extravagant Antarctic experience won’t come cheap. You can expect to pay around AUD$95,100 for a nine-night trip, but this takes care of transfers from Cape Town, three meals per day cooked by an in-house chef, imported wines and beers, essential polar gear and clothing and guided tours.
