The 8 Best Places Around Sydney To Get An Epic Jacaranda Shot For The ‘Gram

There’s never been a better time to stop and smell the flowers. Earlier in October day-trippers from Sydney and Canberra couldn’t resist a ride to golden canola fields around Cowra to refresh their social feeds.

Now, it’s just about time for the bright purple flowers of the Jacaranda tree to take over. While Grafton and its annual Jacaranda Festival about seven hours from the city is the true star of the season, there are plenty of places around Sydney that’ll serve up purple background realness worthy of even the most curated Instagram pages.

One urban myth has it that some random hospital matron used to send every new mum home with jacaranda seedling, another says that the trees were often gifted to soldiers returning from World War II. The truth is unknown, but the fact is you won’t have to wander far to get ‘the shot’ — there are jacarandas everywhere.

For something truly eye-catching though, here are eight places to get you started.

The Rocks

Name a backdrop more iconic than the harbour bridge and rows of purple trees, I’ll wait. You’ll find a good spread of jacarandas all over The Rocks area and into Circular Quay.

Kirribilli

For that whole influencer-in-the-middle-of-the-road classic shot, you’ll have to jostle for a spot around Kirribilli, particularly on McDougall Street.

Hunter’s Hill

This is a spot so prime for the purple flowers that Hunters Hills Trust typically organises walking tours through the suburb’s best streets, although they’ll be skipping 2020.

Woolloomooloo

Sydney Centrepoint Tower pokes out the top of the thick jacaranda flowers lining Cathedral Street in Woolloomooloo for a pretty epic view.

Woolwich

Start at the Old School House and take the hour and a half walk around Woolwich, through Kelly’s Bush and ending at old Woolwich Dock to get the full jacaranda/ harbour side experience.

The Royal Botanic Gardens is a gem at any time of year, but come the end of October and the reaching jacarandas level it up.

A lazy Saturday wander Glebe Markets and wandering the jacaranda-lined streets? Sounds like a right old treat if you ask me.
