Leaving here. Seriously. Hire a car and you’re just a few of hours drive to Cape Reinga to the north or Coromandel to the Southeast. Get a cheap flight to the South Island. Fly to Christchurch and return a hire car to Queenstown, stopping in at Wanaka on the way. Auckland’s amazing, but you’ve come all this way. Why not spend a couple of days going a little further?
