Australia Is Planning The Biggest. Hotel. Ever.

Sometimes having the world’s largest barrier reef just isn’t enough.

The world’s biggest hotel is being planned for Cairns. The Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort is a six-star hotel and casino covering 340 square acres with 7500 rooms, an 18-hole golf course, a lagoon, and an aquarium in the lobby. You know, the essentials.

This is not a film still from The Fifth Element.

If it goes ahead, the vast resort-city it will be 11 times bigger than Australia’s existing largest hotel, the Four Points Sheraton in Sydney.

Yes, that is Orlando Bloom and his ex Kate Bosworth on the left there. The power of Aquis reunited them.

The $8.15 billion dollar project was submitted by Hong Kong billionaire Tony Fung, however it’s been halted by the Queensland Gaming Commission who are in no rush to approve the takeover bid for the Reef Hotel Casino in Cairns, which would be required as part of the planning process. Plans for the resort are still looking likely, though.

The location for the resort is a former sugar cane farm 15km north of Cairns in Yorkey’s Knob.
