A J-Pop Star’s Guide To Harajuku

J-Pop princess Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is one of the biggest cultural sensations on the planet right now. With her eccentric mix of catchy pop tunes and a killer fashion sense, KPP is the real deal.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu will be hitting our shores later this month for two exclusive shows in Melbourne and Sydney, playing songs from her illustrious repertoire including hits from her Gold-certified album Pika Pika Fantajin.

KPP took some time out of her busy schedule to chat to AWOL about Japan’s capital of quirk, Harajuku. Here are five of her favourite places to hit up when she’s in town.

Kinsella

Address: 3-22-7 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo

This store carries many second-hand pieces from overseas, mainly a selection of retro, ’80s style clothes. I like this store, so you might enjoy it too!

Kawaii Monster Café

Address: YM square building 4F, 4-31-10, Jingumae, Shibuya, Tokyo

Curated by Sebastian Masuda, Kawaii Monster Café is a great place to experience typical Harajuku. It’s a café with the concept of Kawaii, and very dreamy. Sometimes the food there doesn’t look like food, like colourful pasta, and it’s such a fun place – you will enjoy it!

G2?

Address: Jingumae building 2F, 3-22-7 Jingumae, Shibuya, Tokyo

G2? is another store that carries second-hand selections. Very retro and cute, and not that expensive, it’s been one of my favourites since high school.

La Foret Harajuku

Address: 11-11-6 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo

La Foret Harajuku is big fashion building with great selection of stores, and sometimes I end up shopping just at La Foret and nowhere else for the whole day.

Harajuku Gyoza Lou

Address: 6-2-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo

A really good dumpling place – reasonably priced, delicious and quick to serve. I hear many tourists go here and I recommend trying the bean sprouts.
