Soon You Might Be Able To Airbnb The Opera House

Hold onto your hats: lucky guests might soon be able to spend the night at Sydney Opera House.

The New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment is currently considering a plan to turn six spots inside Sydney’s famed Opera House into temporary “experience accommodation”. These overnight stays would be a “new and innovative” way to experience the Opera House and “shift perspectives on a well-known public institution.”

The proposal will see guests camping the Opera House’s Utzon Room – a room which boasts floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the harbour – and the Board Room in a set of “Danish-themed” luxury suites, at five occasions throughout the year. Another plan sees the northern and southern foyers of the Joan Sutherland Theatre and the Concert Hall being converted into dorms twice a year, with the capacity for 100 people on cot-type beds.

Overnight visitors wouldn’t be charged, but instead have to enter into a lottery through Airbnb to secure their spot.

In 2015, the Sydney Opera House signed a two-year deal with Airbnb, with the global accommodation brand funding free tours of the building for Airbnb super hosts.

The development proposal is yet to be determined by NSW Planning, so keep your eyes peeled. In the meantime, there’s still a few other ways to get inside this World Heritage Building, including a new package that includes a walk-on role during a performance at the House. Cooooool.
