11 Things To Do In Sydney When It’s Sunny

Pop the champagne and dust off the BBQ; the sun has come out in Sydney and it’s time to celebrate. Best known for its brilliant beaches and coastal walks, here are 11 other things to do while the sun is shining in Australia’s favourite harbour city.

#1 Explore Barangaroo Reserve

Official opening of Barangaroo Reserve on Sydney Harbour foreshore on Saturday 22 August 2015. Pack your picnic basket and head to to newly opened Barangaroo Reserve for one of the best views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and waterfront. Forget the supplies if you’re feeling lazy – they usually have food trucks parked there on weekends or you can grab something as you walk through The Rocks before exploring the six hectares of landscaped walking and cycling trails, lookouts and rockpools developed along the foreshore. Don’t miss the final Giant Picnic on November 1 (11am – 5pm) to celebrate the new green space.


#2 Visit Sculpture by the Sea

Sydney’s public art exhibitions bloom when the sun comes out. Head to Bondi for the annual Sculpture by the Sea (October  22– November 8) that runs between its most famous beach and Tamarama. There’s over 100 different sculptures scattered along the two kilometre coastal walk, so take your camera and get snapping.


#3 Sink a mojito at the Coogee Pavilion Rooftop bar

With panoramic views across Coogee beach, the newly opened Coogee Pavilion Rooftop is the place to be when the sun is high in the sky. With its stylish yet casual interiors, you can drop in after a swim or dress up for sunset cocktails with friends. Don’t miss trying the grilled haloumi and charred octopus on the Mediterranean-inspired menu.


#4 Hit the Brewery Yard Markets

The Brewery Yard Markets are Sydney’s latest markets to hit town. Head to Chippendale’s Central Park and grab a deck chair to enjoy the live music before wandering past the art demonstrations and stalls filled with handcrafted products like gourmet popsicles and micro-brewed ices teas. It runs from 10am ’til 4pm on the first and third Sunday of every month,


#5 Do yoga looking over Circular Quay

Find your centre at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s free Spring Yoga Series held every Thursday evening on their rooftop Sculpture Terrace from October 15 to January 28. Embrace the setting sun and enjoy panoramic views of the Sydney’s best landmarks – the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House – all while getting fit. Namaste.


#6 Walk The (Goods) Line

Starting from the Devonshire Street tunnel, The Goods Line is Sydney’s latest public space to open, complete with footpaths, table tennis, picnic tables and grassy knolls to laze about on. Similar to the popular High Line in New York, the 500 metre walkway connecting Ultimo with Darling Harbour reveals hints of its 1850’s railroad past with old train tracks scattered along the way. Keep an eye out for pop-up events as word spreads about this new green space in the centre of the city.


#7 Go glamping on Cockatoo Island

Forget about sore backs and roughing it at your usual camping spots; glamping on Cockatoo Island can give you that camping-under-the-stars feeling but with a few bonus luxuries like full flush toilets, hot showers, ready-made beds and even hot meals made to order. What’s not to like?


#8 Get on yer’ bike!

With new bike paths running rampant across the city, two wheeling is the new way to see the best Sydney has to offer. From October 10 ’til October 31, the Sydney Rides Festival has events that celebrate all things cycling. Fine tune your body and mind in Pedal Stroke Yoga or join a leisurely Saturday Slowies ride with the Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club.


#9 Party on the Island Bar

The Island is the most exclusive bar on the Harbour, featuring DJs mixing tunes right on the water. Moving between locations in Sydney Harbour, expect good music, tasty food and the best views of the city. Don’t miss grabbing your tickets to the weekly Beach Club events where arrival is via boat only.


#10 Quench your thirst at the Sydney Craft Beer Week

What’s better than drinking a beer in the sunshine? Exactly – nothing. So head along and enjoy a drop of the finest during one of the largest craft beer festivals in the country – Sydney Craft Beer Week (October 16 – 25). You have your choice of events from the Opening Gala on Friday October 16 to the sunny Collaroy Beach Club Sunday Sounds Sessions with a free return bus from the Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst and live music on site, resulting in one hell of a beach party.


#11 Dine in a Ferris Wheel

October is Good Food Month which sees Sydney overrun with camera happy foodies chowing down on lunch and dinner specials as part of the world’s largest food festival. This year features the special Ferris Wheel Dining Experience where you can board a private ferris wheel cabin and enjoy the last rays of sunshine before fine dining on a three course meal while taking a spin high above the city.
