You Definitely Need To Go To Melbourne’s Salami Festival

This October Melbourne will be host to the fourth annual Salami Festa where both salami makers and salami eaters unite for the love of cured meats.

With salami making season almost coming to a close, the Melbourne Salami Festa will descend on Northcote Town Hall from October 16 to 18 for three days of making, teaching, eating and judging Melbourne’s best salamis.

The crux of the festival is the Salami Competition which sees meat aficionados from across Melbourne submitting their very best home-made salami. The winning cure will walk away with a 100kg Berkshire Pig, $500 in salami making equipment, cookbooks, a dinner voucher at OMBRA Salumi Bar and a “gold medal prosciutto”.

Each salami will be judged by the highest calibre of salami judges – basically everyone’s dream job – who will sample each of the submitted meats and judge based on taste, smell, texture, and overall quality. You can also thank the salami gods because there’s a People’s Choice Award which means you can totally sample each of the 70+ salamis entered into the competition and make up your own mind about who should win.

The festival will host salami making workshops so you can learn to cure your own meats, as well as demonstrations on delicious sausage-based dishes like pork and fennel sausage ragu, fried pizza with salami stuffing, english pork pie and a class on the art of the blood sausage.

There will also be live music from The Furbelows, DJ Emma Peel and vintage sounds from Bella Ciao and Caro Furlan.
