Love them or hate them, hostels are a fact of life for many young travellers. But, fortunately for those of us with champagne taste and a beer budget, incredible digs have popped up worldwide.

Now, the folks at HostelWorld have released their Customer Annual Ratings, shouting out the best of the best from across the globe. Based on a million customer reviews over 12 months, they’ve revealed everything from the best small hostel to the best local stays, with a number of newcomers among the winners.

A whopping 35,000 properties in over 170 countries were considered, with categories broken down by property size, continent, country and city. Scroll down to see a sample of the winners, then check out the full list here.


Best Hostel In Australia: Traveller’s Oasis, Cairns

Just a stone’s throw from the Great Barrier Reef, the surprising winner of the Australian category is Traveller’s Oasis. It has a pool, a big deck for barbies and a convenient, central location. Everything you want in a hostel, really.

Best of all, four-bed dorms start at just $25 per person, per night.

Best Small Hostel: Sungate One, Madrid

Located in the much-love (and aptly named) Centro district, Sungate One is surrounded by shopping, bars, cafes, and museums. It might be small, but it packs a bunch of common spaces and a communal kitchen if you’re keen to try your hand at some Spanish tapas.

Dorms start at $38 per person, per night.

Best Large Hostel: Start Hostel Taipei Main Station

The perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing, Start Hostel is just five minutes’ walk from Taipei Main Station, Ning-xia night market, Di-hua old street and Tai-yuan shopping streets. Nuff said.

Best New Hostel: Faloe Hostel, Malaysia

Best Hostel For Groups: ClinkNOORD, Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city best enjoyed with friends, and ClinkNOORD is the best hostel for bunking in together. Located in central Amsterdam Noord, about 10 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal Station, it’s the perfect meeting place. It also has free Wi-Fi, which is always a winner.
