Love them or hate them, hostels are a fact of life for many young travellers. But, fortunately for those of us with champagne taste and a beer budget, incredible digs have popped up worldwide.
Now, the folks at HostelWorld have released their Customer Annual Ratings, shouting out the best of the best from across the globe. Based on a million customer reviews over 12 months, they’ve revealed everything from the best small hostel to the best local stays, with a number of newcomers among the winners.
A whopping 35,000 properties in over 170 countries were considered, with categories broken down by property size, continent, country and city. Scroll down to see a sample of the winners, then check out the full list here.

Amsterdam is a city best enjoyed with friends, and ClinkNOORD is the best hostel for bunking in together. Located in central Amsterdam Noord, about 10 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal Station, it’s the perfect meeting place. It also has free Wi-Fi, which is always a winner.
