In Big Gay News, Sydney has won the bid to host WorldPride in 2023. We beat out Montreal and Houston to bring the iconic LGBTIQ event down under.
The news was announced in Athens, Greece at an annual general meeting for InterPride, the international association of Pride event organisers. Sydney won with 60 per cent of the votes — Montreal, Canada ended up with 36 per cent, and Houston, Texas with 3 per cent.

Bringing WorldPride Down Under means we can celebrate and shine a spotlight on the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQI community in the region.”
In addition to being a massive tourism boost for Australia, the event will provide a safe space for LGBTIQ people from the wider Asia-Pacific region. “Many LGBTQI people in Asia Pacific are unable to celebrate pride in their own countries. WorldPride in Sydney would provide the opportunity to celebrate pride in a welcoming city,” said Mardi Gras Board Member and 78er Robyn Kennedy.
