From old VHS copies of Drop Dead Fred to twice-used treadmills, you can generally find pretty cool stuff at garage sales. Perhaps the most remarkable recent discovery is this 75-year-old footage of three Australian capital cities shot by a mystery traveller in 1940 and unearthed at a San Jose (yes, in California) garage sale this year by Tim Peddy.
The footage was restored and digitally converted by The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County then uploaded to YouTube in all of its history-laden glory. There are no further clues as to the identity of the videographer but we can gather a few things about them: they loved greyhound racing, botanical gardens and Australian animals. Well, most Australian animals.
Sydney
Circular Quay has had a full facelift. Also, Sydney had trams.
A way more budget-friendly bridge.
A sunny day means a million bodies on the beach. Sydney, never change.

Brisbane
Round and round, up and down, through the streets of your town.
It seems the people of Brisbane made quite the impression on the mystery photographer.
Hi, can you point me in the direction of the Qantas lounge?
