5 Wild And Wacky Things To Eat And Drink At Vivid 2019

We’re just a few days out from the start of Vivid 2019 and with so much on offer it’s important to stay nourished and hydrated! This year’s line-up promises to engross Sydney in a kaleidoscope of neon colour and blast some amazing music while also dishing up a stellar food and drink program to boot.

As a solid favourite on the Sydney social calendar, Vivid’s awe-inspiring program can be overwhelming at the best of times. To help you decide what to taste during Vivid 2019, we’ve rounded up five of the best and most incredible things to eat and drink during this year’s festival.

#1 Blacklight: Dessert Lab from Gelato Messina

Gelato is a must-do any time of the year, but Messina’s really pulling out the big guns for Vivid 2019. This year, they’re setting up shop inside a black cube that’s illuminated in ultraviolet light, and serving up glowing desserts and bubble tea.

Expect single serves of their signature Magic Mushroom cake, but in neon format! Think chocolate gelato, peanut butter cookies, feuilletine grass (thin flakes of baked crepes) and dulce de leche finished with glow in the dark chocolate and you’ve got the idea. ‘Shrooms not your thing? Opt for the triple-layer dulce de leche gelato cake with a glow in the dark strawberry powder. Yes please!

Messina’s Vivid 2019 installation is a collaboration between DOPA, Edition Coffee Roasters and Bubble Nini, and each partner will be serving their own creation over the course of the festival. Bubble Nine will be slinging two custom ultraviolet bubble teas in the first week, Edition Coffee Roasters will serve a gelato sandwich in week two, and DOPA will close out the festival with two deliciously sweet custom drinks that’re yet to be confirmed.

#2 Glow-up cocktails

Some of Sydney’s best bars will be mixing up cocktails that glow, sparkle and dazzle during Vivid 2019. Get your hands on a light-up cocktail from the Shangri-La Hotel’s Blu Bar on 36, an Espresso Martini served in a glowing neon glass at The Argyle or the “Scarlett Glohansson” concoction from O Bar and Dining.

Hacienda Sydney will also be serving three Tropical Glow Cocktails with stunning views of the installations around the harbour, love.fish is pouring colourful wine cocktails and Grain Bar has dreamt up cocktails topped with fairy floss. You’re welcome.

#3 Crepes from Four Frogs

The already excellent Four Frogs Creperie has come up with not one, not two, but 50 custom Vivid-themed crepes. Whether you want something sweet, savoury or even, dare we say, healthy, there’s something to satisfy your cravings.

Try the crepe with crushed white chocolate Tim Tam with berry coulis and chocolate ice cream, the classic Nutella and strawberry option, a savoury crepe with avocado, mushroom, feta and spinach or the intriguingly-named “crepe on fire” as you wander between the installations.

#4 The Unicone from The Endeavour Tap Rooms

The Endeavour Tap Rooms is one of the most popular spots during Vivid, with amazing views over the festival in the heart of The Rocks. This year, they’ve whipped up a magical dessert that has to be seen to be believed. Oh and we recommend you taste it too.

The Unicone is an ice cream cone gone mad — raspberry ice cream with Chantilly cream (like a fancy whipped cream), with homemade mini meringues, Hundreds & Thousands and fairy floss perched on top. It might not glow, but it’s got all the colours of the rainbow.

#5 A pop-up bar hidden inside the Royal Botanic Gardens

The Light Walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens is back again, and this year explorers will be rewarded at the end of their journey with a pop-up bar and eatery. Inspired by an old-school fisherman’s wharf, the kitchen will be serving up fish and chips, pineapple fritters and warm mac and cheese sprinkled with lobster meat and crispy garlic crumbs. There’s even a fish chowder served in an edible bread bowl (honestly, we wish everything was served in an edible bread bowl).

Take a seat at the bar to order the H.M.A.S Royal Archie, a blue cocktail with Archie Rose gin, pineapple and macadamia. If vodka is your spirit of choice, the Harbour Rose cocktail is mixed with watermelon, cirtus and pink lustre, and the New South Wh-Ale is for craft beer lovers.
