The 7 Best Things To Do In Perth This May

Whether you’re in the mood for a raucous night of belly laughs, a chill-out Sunday sesh, an elegant high tea, food truck festivities or the company of cocktail-shaking Jedis: the month of May has you covered.

#1 Perth Comedy Festival

frank

Sit back, relax and let the comedians do all of the stand-up work at the annual Perth Comedy Festival. Catch familiar names on the local and international comedy circuit or take a punt on a comedy virgin (FYI, there is a show called Comedy Virgins!) who could end up being Australia’s next comical genius… or maybe not. From the lewd to the lyrical to the loquacious, you’re bound to find a show that will tickle your funny bone. This year’s festival runs from April 22 to May 15.

#2 Street festivals galore

Another street festival, you ask? Well, yes. Both the Maylands Street Festival and the Mt Hawthorn Streets and Laneways Festival happen on Sunday May 1, so start at one and finish at the other to make a full day of it. The Maylands Festival runs over four precincts and will see food trucks and hawkers, artisan stalls, pop-up bars, roving performers and bands out in full force.

The boutique Mount Hawthorn Festival will also have street food vendors, market stalls and entertainment stages spilling into its laneways. But wait, there’s more! Inglewood is hosting the Festival in the Wood on Sunday May 15, offering an assortment of entertainment including live music, roller derby demonstrations, and street art and stencilling with local artists. See you on the streets.

#3 Taste of Perth

food

Taste of Perth at Langley Park takes place over the weekend of April 29 to May 1 so it just sneaks into our ‘May’ list – you can thank the gastronomy gods for that. Grab yourself a ticket, put on your foodie apron, and join the hungry hordes where you can design and indulge in your dream tasting menu made up of delectable dishes from Perth’s best restaurants, including the likes of Print Hall, Bib & Tucker and Nobu. Don your chef’s hat as you chat with some of WA’s finest chefs, browse the artisan stalls to stock up on quality produce for the pantry and partake in a masterclass to take your culinary skills up a notch.

#4 May the fourth be with you, cocktail class

CALLING ALL JEDIS! Leave your lightsabers at home and fight the Empire with your cocktail-shaking skills, which may very well elevate you to Jedi Master – Yoda proud, he would be. Happening at Wolf Lane on May 4 (obvs) this cocktail class is for Star Wars fanatics and cocktail enthusiasts alike, and includes two cocktails, sweet treats and a cocktail take-home sheet. Gather your Wookies or go Han Solo – just book in advance for this one and, as always, may the force be with you.

Get your posse together for the ultimate Sunday session at the North Freo Guildhall function space, which is housed in a gorgeous building complete with cosy courtyard. Spend a lazy alfresco afternoon listening to DJs spinning sweet tunes while enjoying innovative cocktails from Australia’s Best Small Bar, the Mechanics Institute, and small bites from Propeller next door. It’s cool, it’s classy, it’s chill: it’s exactly what you need on a Sunday arvo. Keep tabs on their Instagram to keep in the loop about when the next Sunday sesh is being held.

#6 Vending Vincent Thursdays

The City of Vincent presents an evening of food truck festivities in the splendid Hyde Park. Expect a small and intimate, family-friendly affair in the most beautiful of surrounds. Line up for your street food, park yourself on a bench under the tall shady trees looking out over the lake and bask in nature’s serenity. Vending Vincent Thursdays takes place on Thursday evenings until the end of June.

The Ultimate High Tea is being held as part of the Fremantle Heritage Festival, an annual festival that celebrates Freo’s rich heritage with an array of events. If you’re into all things delightful and decadent, come down and indulge in a traditional and refined English afternoon tea at the Fremantle Town Hall on Sunday 29 starting from 2pm. The day includes champagne on arrival and a gift bag for all guests – wear your most ladylike garb, preferably in pastel, and, above all, don’t forget your manners!
