This Sleek New Zealand Cabin Proves Solitude Really Is Bliss

Seclusion is the name of the game at New Zealand’s Scrubby Bay house near Christchurch in New Zealand.

Found in a small open valley surrounded by rolling hills, Scrubby Bay sits on the Banks Peninsula of the South Island’s east coast, a spot so serene that you’re in danger of not knowing major world events, Tomorrow, When The War Began style.

During the designing stages, Auckland-based architectural firm Pattersons referred to the building as a “piece of slowly ageing farm driftwood, around which stock can graze.” You’ll almost feel like you’ve been put out to pasture – but in a good way. Waltz around the private hillsides that surround you or enjoy a spot of skinny dipping in the icy waters beside you – after all, you’re in the middle of nowhere and there’s no one else around.

The home is equipped to fit 14 guests, there’s a swimming pool and spa, an open fire and deck to relax on, as well as a fully equipped kitchen. There’s also a huge open plan dining and living space, well stocked with books and games for all ages – I’m just going to put it out there, this would be the coolest place to throw a destination birthday party. If you can’t deal with the disconnect, there’s Wi-Fi too.

Getting there might be the only difficult part of your stay – guests can choose between a short helicopter ride, or opt to traverse a rough rural road towards the secluded property. But we’re willing to bet the bumpy ride will be worth it.
