You guys, the best thing that could possibly happen has happened: Sir David Attenborough has joined us on Instagram. Praise be.
What’s more, he’s joined it to try and save us and the planet. “I’m making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me because, as we all know, the world is in trouble,” he says in his only post so far. “Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying… The list goes on and on”.
He went on to explain that he would be using the platform to share videos explaining “what the problems are and how we can deal with them”.

Now, not surprisingly considering he’s 94 years old and my own grandparents can’t even work out how to send a text, he’s getting a little help actually managing the account.
“Social media isn’t David’s usual habitat so while he’s recorded messages solely for Instagram, like the one in this post, we’re helping to run this account,” explains the post.
“In case you’re wondering, ‘we’ are Jonnie and Colin and we worked with David on A Life On Our Planet. So, as well as sharing the messages he’s recorded especially for this account we’ll also post some exclusive clips and behind the scenes content”.
Not surprisingly, the account had 200,000 followers within the first hour of his first post. At the time of writing this, 15 hours later, he’s up to 2.2 million followers. Oh and he’s following no-one, what a baller.
Meanwhile, I’m still hanging tight for the Sir David Attenborough, Dave and Hans Zimmer team up for a Planet Earth reboot.
As the man said himself, “join me – or as we used to say in those early days of radio, stay tuned.”
