Qantas Has Axed Vegetarian Options On Some Domestic Flights And Customers Aren’t Happy

Qantas has been slammed for not catering to vegetarians, vegans, or people with religious dietary requirements after it was revealed that the major airline has stopped offering vegetarian meals on some domestic flight routes.

Environmentalist Jon Dee took to social media to complain about the news after being informed on an Adelaide to Sydney flight that the only option available was a chicken pie.

“I’m on the Adelaide to Sydney flight – I’m informed that Qantas no longer serve vegetarian food on domestic flights (except Perth),” said Dee on Twitter. “Crew said “one size fits all”- Joyce has really screwed Qantas.”

Qantas has confirmed the news in a statement provided to The Guardian, noting that it has simplified the food options on short-haul flights amid the ongoing COVID pandemic.

“During Covid we made some changes to onboard food and service offerings to simplify the service delivery for our crew,” a spokesperson said.

“We now offer a single meal/snack option per flight on our shorter flights, such as a chicken pie or a zucchini and onion frittata. If the option on a particular flight is not suitable for vegetarians, we try to offer an alternative of a small sweet or savoury snack which is vegetarian.”

Qantas confirmed that “one-size-fits-all” approach is applicable on all domestic flights shorter than 3.5 hours for economy passengers.

A complete menu with vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options will still be available on long-haul domestic flights and international routes.

Vegetarian meals, as well as options catering to other dietary requirements, will still be available on all Jetstar and Virgin flights.
