Dogs Are Finally Being Honoured With A Whole Museum Just For Them

If you’ve ever wandered around a museum and felt slightly disappointed by the doggo quotient, then guess what, you’re in luck: New York is getting its very own Museum of the Dog.

It’s been a long time coming. Sure, a lot of New York’s museums might be internationally renowned and full of priceless historical artefacts, but they’re all distinctly lacking when it comes to content that features our furry, obedient friends, making the New York dog museum a welcome change indeed.

The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, as its full title goes, has been a staple of Missouri culture for over 30 years, but now it’s moving to New York.

The new location is opening its doors right in the heart of the Big Apple, a stone’s throw from Grand Central Station.

The artwork displayed at the museum ranges from oil paintings by established masters, to sketches and sculptures by up-and-coming new creatives.

One of the most famous paintings in the collection is Frederick Thomas Daws’ ‘Flashlight of Mannerhead’.

A striking portrait of Daws’ own rather resplendent looking, then-two-year-old poodle, it’s a real draw for the Museum.

Another highlight is Charles Van den Eycken’s ‘Sweet Temptation, or Willpower’.

Van den Eycken, who was a master of capturing the expressions of puppers and moggies, reached his zenith with the portrait. The look of sheer, unbridled want on the canine faces in the painting will be immediately familiar to anyone who has owned a dog that thinks with its guts (so, most dog owners).

Best of all, the New York dog museum is strikingly affordable: you need dish out a mere US$60 (AU$84) to become a member, which means you’ll get unlimited Museum of the Dog access for a whole year.

Hard to beat value like that, really.
