Mona Foma Is Confirmed For 2021 And The Line-Up Is Here

One of Australia’s most popular, and probably one of the quirkiest, festivals is Mona Foma — from Tassie’s much loved Museum Of Old And New Art. It snuck in last year just before the world turned to shit (unlike its moody brother, Dark Fomo), and they’re officially back again for next year baby.

We even have the full line-up, and to be honest it’s given me the most hope for a better 2021 than I’ve had yet.

The first hot tea reveals that a world premiere of new piece by internationally loved artist, Robin Fox, will be set up in Launceston‘s gorgeous Cataract Gorge.

The piece, titled Aqua Luma, will feature 12 metre high water jets that fill a basin, which then release “subharmonic frequencies” — which to people who don’t play music like me, basically just means it’ll make sounds, which is fun. Plus laser will be making geometrical patterns in the water spray overhead, and god I love a laser.

The best part is, this installation will be free to go enjoy.

The second little peep into next years return festival is the revelation that Hobart‘s iconic K&D Warehouse will be transformed into No Place Like Home, temporarily housing a series of artworks selected by Mona curator, Emma Pike. You can expect a range of video installations, art and sculpture by local and international artists like Tony Albert, Zanny Begg, Andy Hutson, Rachel Maclean, Nell, Ryan Presley and Pheobe Schmidt.

“We’re excited to share a snippet of the Mona Foma 2021 program: installations in two of the state’s most dramatically different but equally beloved locations,” said Mona Foma’s Curator, Brian Ritchie.

“Robin Fox has been involved in every festival program since Mona Foma’s inception, so it’s appropriate that he has created a new work to address a year like no other. While at K&D Warehouse the art will take you over the rainbow after the storm that was the year 2020”.

The full line-up

Mona Foma is really focusing on celebrating local next year, with over 352 artists, 90 percent of who draw their inspo from Tasmania.

  • Hobart: Judith’s Return, The Masque of the Red Death, Forest Gin Walk, Mofo Sessions at Mona, Let Me Dry Your Eyes, Rueremus
  • Both cities: Big hART’s Zinc, After Erika Eiffel, Relay, Listen Deeply, Happy Days, The Ubus

Dates for 2021

The 2021 festival will run from January 15 to January 24, with music and art taking place from January 15 to 17 in Launceston and January 22 to 24 in Hobart. You can check out the full program on December 7, with tickets going on sale via the website from 10am on December 8.

The best part is, that Tasmania’s borders are (mostly) open again, so time for a trip, I say.
