The Louvre Pivots To Perfume With Eight Scents Based On Famous Artworks


The Louvre is known for a lot of things. The Mona Lisa. Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s “Apeshit” video. Being a chic glass pyramid. But now France’s famous art museum has a new hustle, creating eight perfumes based on its most famous artworks.

The museum commissioned the French perfumery Officine Universelle Buly to create scents inspired by the museum’s iconic masterpieces. The perfumes add another layer for visitors to experience the artworks.


The Venus de Milo has received the perfume treatment, as has The Winged Victory of Samothrace – the sculpture that’s instantly recognisable from the “Apeshit” video.

Its scent was created using tuberose, magnolia and jasmine flowers, with a slight woody scent from myrrh. The Venus de Milo scent smells like mandarin, jasmine and amber.

The Valpinçon Bather painting by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres has been reimagined in citronella, orange blossom, patchouli and incense. The perfume for Saint Joseph the Carpenter smells like cedar wood infused with pink berries.


Conversation in a Park was interpreted with sour notes of peppermint, orange and roses. Musk features heavily in the scents for the Grande Odalisque and The Lock paintings – the former also has incense and pink pepper, and the latter uses white lily flowers.

And turns out the sculpture Nymph with the Scorpion smells like heliotrope, jasmine, amber and musk.

The perfumes are all available in the Officine Universelle Buly outlet inside the Louvre until January 6, 2020. They’re not cheap, costing €150 (AU$242) for a bottle. But they’re masterworks inspired by masterworks so easy come, easy go I guess. The scents are also available as candles, scented soap sheets and scented postcards.
