After Rex and Virgin just announced unheard-of $49 fares between Sydney and Melbourne, Jetstar has now thrown its hat into the price war ring with one-way flights between Sydney and Melbourne for $39, plus flights to Tassie from $41.
It’s a great week for domestic travel, with airline fare competition heating up on some popular routes. The main war zone? The Sydney to/from Melbourne flight path.
We’ve watched a domino effect on prices thanks to Rex, who announced they were launching flights between major cities for the first time – disrupting the duopoly Qantas and Virgin have held on major routes for too long. And we all get to benefit.
After offering $49 one-way fares between Sydney and Melbourne, Virgin Australia came to the party with a price match. Virgin also took on Qantas’ new ultra flexible booking, change and cancellation policy which guarantees unlimited flight date changes until January 2022. Read about those sales here.
It was only a matter of time before Jetstar presented their offers to the people. Now, they’ve launched $39 one-way fares between Sydney and Melbourne for the same travel period of March 1-31, 2021, for bookings by February 15.
Most airlines are also offering wider domestic sales with longer travel windows, and similarly, Jetstar is working with Tourism Tasmania on a big Tasmania push. This is great news as there is so much to experience on the Apple Isle (especially when it comes to road trips).
You can now fly between Melbourne (Tullamarine) and Launceston for $41 one way, or Melbourne (Tullamarine) and Hobart for $45 one way. Sydneysiders can nab $55 and $59 one-way fares to Launceston and Hobart respectively. But there aren’t just sale fares from Melbourne and Sydney.
Other great deals include Adelaide to Hobart from $75 one way; Brisbane to Launceston from $99 one way and Gold Coast (Coolangatta) to Hobart from $105 one way. For the full sale, click here.
It should be noted, however, that checked baggage is not included in these sales – a point of difference to Rex and Virgin, who offer 23kg checked luggage plus refreshments with their $49 fares.
If you want to compare apples to apples, when adding 20kg of luggage plus an in-flight meal to the $39 Jetstar fare, the one-way price is $84. So these budget fares are great if all you need is 7kg of carry on and want to avoid plane food.
Jetstar do have a COVID flexibility policy where you’ll be eligible for a credit voucher for the full value of your booking if your flight is cancelled or affected by border restriction changes. You’ll then have a year to use your credit on another available flight or across multiple bookings. Terms are here.
The Jetstar sales end 11:59pm AEDT February 15, 2021, unless sold out prior. So if you didn’t organise a Valentine’s gift in time, this would be a pretty great save (but here’s some cheap and free ideas just in case).
