The World’s Best Gelato Has Been Crowned After An Intense Three-Year-Long Contest

Everyone reckons they know the best place for ice cream, but it’s official – the world’s best gelato has been named after a long three-year race.

To select the final 36 contenders in the World Gelato Tour, officials conducted preliminary rounds across the globe, searching high and low for the best gelato in all the land. The tour visited Shenzhen, Chicago, Tokyo, Berlin, Austin, Dubai, Melbourne, Valencia, and Rome.

Last weekend, the tour came to a close in the Italian city of Rimini, where 36 ice-creameries battled it out for dessert supremacy. Over the course of three days, 50,000 hungry visitors consumed a monstrous 2.5 tonnes of the creamy goodness and then voted for their favourite.

Taking out the Italian ice-cream equivalent of the Olympic gold was Alessandro Crispini of Gelateria Crispini in the Umbrian town of Spoleto, Italy. His winning scoop? A humble pistachio.

Made from a combination of three Sicilian pistachio varieties, the nuts are slow-roasted for 24-hours before being mixed with a combination of sugar and vanilla beans. It’s then mixed through blended cream and caramelised sugar with a pinch of Adriatic Sea salt, then chucked in the freezer.

In addition to the public’s vote, the winner was chosen by a jury of ice cream experts, featuring chefs, food critics and the “historian and curator of the Carpigiani Ice Cream Museum” – an actual real job.
