7 Lunar New Year Events Happening Around Melbourne To Celebrate The Year Of The Ox

The Year of The Ox is fast approaching, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate Lunar New Year around Melbourne this year.

Dragon boats, lion dances, LNY-themed food and even blessings from Chinese Gods are all on offer in the last half of February this year. These are our top seven picks, but you can check out everything that’s happening here.

#1 A festival at Chinatown

On February 14 from 1.30pm, Chinatown will come to life with live performances, delicious food and even giveaways, all to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

#2 A street party at Queen Victoria Markets

Also on February 14, QVM will be hosting a street part celebration with food stalls, lion dances, and kiddie craft sessions from 10am to 4pm.

#3 Get blessed

On Feb 10 you can head to Chinatown, Myer and Emporium between 10am and 5pm to be blessed by the Chinese Gods, and even get yourself a fortune cookie.

#4 Watch the Dragon Boast festival

Two days over February 13 to 14, you can watch 200-metre dragon boats racing each other at Victoria Harbour. There’ll also be a dragon boat tug-of-war, lion dances and plenty of food trucks.

#5 Visit Melbourne Central

From Feb 12 to 13, you can watch live music, score festive merch, check out the Lunar Mart pop-up on weekends and enjoy LNY-themed food.

#6 Pay your respects at a pop-up temple

Fo Guang Shan Temple will pop up  at 138 Lt. Bourke Street from Feb 11 to 14, where you can join in offering your respects to Buddha and receive a blessing.

#7 Learn to play Mahjong
