Where To See Japan’s Cherry Blossoms In 2019

The cherry blossoms are one of Japan’s most popular annual attractions for locals and tourists alike, but it can be hard to fit in a visit when they’re only in bloom for about two weeks every year. The forecast aims to make it easier for everyone to see these flowers by predicting when the blossoms will begin to flower and when they will reach full bloom.

It’s updated regularly as the climate shifts and affects the flowers, but currently the flowers are expected to bloom earlier than in previous years, starting on March 20 in Kochi on the Shikoku Island, with full bloom expected on March 27.

Cherry blossoms in Tokyo should begin to flower on March 24, reaching full bloom on March 31. Tokyo is considered one of the best places to see the blossoms – the Nakameguro neighbourhood is a top destination for riverside viewing, and Shinjuku Gyoen park has more than 1,000 species of sakura.

Kyoto will begin to see flowers on March 26, with Osaka following a day later and both seeing full blooms on April 3. Sapporo in Hokkaido will be the last place to see the blossoms, starting on May 4 and full bloom predicted for May 8.

The 2019 cherry blossom forecast estimates the dates for approximately 1,000 popular viewing locations across the country, so chances are you’ll be able to find a place to join in the flower viewing season, or hanami. Locals celebrate hanami with daytime picnics under the blossoms, and tourists are encouraged to take part.
