Did You Know Australia Has The World’s Only Horizontal Waterfalls?

Horizontal Falls, Western Australia

Talbot Bay, located on the coast of the Kimberleys in Western Australia, is home to a very unique phenomenon.

At the edge of the bay, there are two gorges that look a lot like waterfalls – except they’re horizontal, not vertical. Yep, you read that right – horizontal waterfalls. They’re real, and the best part is that they’re only a short plane ride from Broome.

Nope, there’s no magic going on here, just a unique water flow. Nicknamed the “Horries”, the two Horizontal Falls are the result of unique tidal movements. As water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passageway and, as it squeezes through the gap, it flows in a waterfall-like motion. Pretty neat, huh?

The northern-most gorge is about 20m wide, with the smaller gorge is about 12m wide. Depending on tide, it’s possible to drive boats through the two flowing passages, but be sure to pop on your white water rafting hat, because the ride can be a little rocky.

If gushing water and wobbly boats aren’t your thing, your best bet is to check it out from the sky, where you’ll get a pretty amazing look at this unique natural phenomenon.
