Curious about where all your favourite chefs like to dine on their night off? This week over 500 Aussie chefs and restaurant owners cast their vote for the annual The Australian Financial Review Top 100 Restaurants awards, presented by Qantas.
The awards celebrate the very best in Australia’s foodie scene – from creative regional kitchens to hole-in-the-wall inner city diners – these spots have been elected for their creativity, their class and, of course, their damn fine food.
It’s probably no surprise then that the top prize was taken out by foraging poster boy Ben Shewry and his Ripponlea haunt Attica. With a degustation menu that features marron with lemon aspen, finger lime and peal meat, red kangaroo and bunya nuts, dining at Attica is an engaging and interactive wonder.
Just edging out last year’s strong contenders Mr. Wong, Cutler & Co. and Cumulus Inc. were new additions to the top ten: wood-fired centric Ester in Chippendale took fifth place; Automata from former Momofuku sous-chef Clayton Wells got a look in at number nine; and Franklin, David Moyle’s cosy eatery that’s guiding Hobart’s inventive food scene, rounded out the top 10.

After taking out the number two spot, Dan Hunter from Brae also received the coveted Australia’s Best Chef gong from his peers. Celebrated for his driven and meticulous style, Dan focusses on seasonal produce that connects his diners with the vast land surrounding them: the beautiful Otways region of Victoria.
The People’s Award was awarded to Canberra’s CBD institution Akiba, who deliver sizzling Asian street food dishes to their bustling CBD haunt. If there weren’t queues already forming for their Japanese friend chicken and tasty dumpling dishes, there’s no doubt there will be now.
