No foams, no dry ice and no over-the-top fine dining – just good food from great chefs in the right atmosphere; that’s what Monocle’s Restaurant Awards for the best places in the world to eat promises and delivers.
The respected global affairs and culture magazine has rounded up ten restaurants that are totally worth travelling to. The “guaranteed craze-free” eateries on the list look beyond food trends, pomp and pretension to arrive at the bare bones of what makes eating out so enjoyable: honest ingredients, tasty dishes and good service.
Contesting Melbourne’s ‘dining capital’ crown, Sydney restaurant The Apollo in Potts Point – the only Australian eatery to claim a spot on the list – came in seventh for its “divine Greek food” served up in a stylish setting. While the restaurant’s design – its chairs in particular – is mentioned, it’s clearly the flavours that hit hard. Monocle praises The Apollo, which was founded in 2012, for its longevity in Sydney’s “faddy food scene” and singles out the roasted lamb with greek yoghurt and lemon as a signature dish. And with a banquet dinner coming in at around the $55 mark (or $60 with ouzo), it’s a much more affordable option than most restaurants that top prestigious dining lists.
The other restaurants on Monocle‘s list span the globe from Tokyo to Beirut to Stockholm. Check out the full list below and remember that’s it’s totally OK to plan your holiday around food.
