Tkay Maidza Gave Us Her Top 8 Adelaide Spots

There’s a lot of hype around compelling young Adelaide artist Tkay Maidza. Creating tunes that are part rap, part electro and part pop, the Zimbabwe-born rapper is equally hailed for her energetic performing style as she is her recorded output, with her 2014 mix tape Switch Tape earning her a Future Legends of Aussie Hip Hop badge from FasterLouder.

Having recently been announced as Lykke Li’s replacement for the touring Laneway Festival, we asked the powerful and hypnotic performer for her favourite spots in South Australia’s capital. Even better, she has illustrated herself into the scenes of her favourite places. What a legend.

#1 The Adelaide Botanic Garden

Adelaide Botanic Gardens

The Adelaide Botanic Garden is one of my favourite places to hang out and admire the scenery and serenity. The way it’s been planned and built is so beautiful and you never run out of new pretty areas and secret spots to find.

#2 Ginza Miyako

Ginza Miyako

Ginza Miyako, my first love. This is my favourite Japanese restaurant. The food is so fresh (like all Japanese food). Its also a nice contrast – eating in there where it’s really calm and watching the busyness that goes on across the road at the train station.

#3 Nord Burger

Nord Burger

Nord Burger is the only reason I go to Norwood, which is one of the “fancier” areas to go shopping in. The burgers and chips – actually, everything about this place – is so bomb. If you want to know what America tastes like, it’s this place. Salted caramel milkshakes. The end. Plus theres a cinema across the road.

#4 The Belair National Park

The Belair National Park

The Belair National park is another serene place I like to explore. This place gives off  kind of creepy, haunted vibes so it’s always exhilarating exploring this place at 5pm in winter.

#5 Marion Greater Union Cinemas

Marion Greater Union

Marion Greater Union Cinemas is the best cinema complex in Adelaide. It’s so much fun. I really love movies.

#6 The Sky

The Sky

This is me falling from The Sky because the view from the Windy Point restaurant (or Windy Point in general) is to die for. Also who wouldn’t want to eat delicious very expensive food with not-very-straightforward names while looking at the city lights of Adelaide? I love it.

#7 Mount Lofty

Mount Lofty

This is how I feel after walking up Mount Lofty. You will understand one day.

#8 Grange Beach

Grange Beach

Grange Beach is a nice place to go to if you’re looking for a beach that’s less crowded but still a cool hang out spot. It’s beautiful basically all of the time between 5am and 10pm in summer. I can’t vouch for the hours outside of that. You wouldn’t really be looking at much.
