An American-Style Barbecue Festival Is Heading To Sydney & Melbourne

Remember when a Bunnings’ sausage on a piece of white bread naively fulfilled all of our BBQ desires? With no disrespect to the original, we’re pretty stoked that Australia’s perception of barbecue has expanded to include the low and slow ways of American smoked meat.

After the success of last year’s inagural Melbourne Barbecue Festival, the organisers are back this year with a new name, an additional state and an expanded lineup of meat makers. Officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, The Yaks Barbecue Festival will happen in both Melbourne and Sydney this summer featuring food stalls, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment and – of course – the most mouth-watering competitive cook-off between Australia’s premier barbecue pitmasters. The best performing Australian teams in both Sydney and Melbourne will be invited to represent Australia at world-famous barbecue contests in the USA.  Cook-off team registrations are open now for Melbourne here and Sydney here, and places are strictly limited.

The gatherings are supersized this year, with Flemington Racecourse announced as the new Melbourne venue and The Domain hosting the event in Sydney. But the protein party won’t stop there, with a full program of events released later this year including special dinners at venues around both cities plus a free admission barbecue street food festival at Queen Victoria Market on Sunday January 31.

The Yaks Barbecue Festival happens at The Domain  in Sydney on Saturday January 30 and in Melbourne at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday February 6. Tickets for are on sale from noon on Thursday October 8 from Moshtix.
