You’ve Gotta Eat This: Tamales

What is it? You may have heard something being described as a “hot tamale”, i.e. too hot to handle – but what exactly is a hot tamale? Well, it’s a traditional sweet or savoury steamed dish that packs in a bunch of flavour.

Where can you get it? Tamales are a Central American staple (the dish dates back to the Mayan and Aztec times) which has in recent years found its way into the diets of many Northern Americans.

What’s in it? The dish is usually made with masa, a dough made from corn, in a leaf-wrapper (which is discarded before eating). Opening a fresh tamale is like unwrapping a super tasty present – inside you’ll find anything from meat, cheese, fruits, vegetables to hot chilli.

Is it good for you? Not so bad, but be warned, they aren’t kidding when they call these “hot” tamales – be wary of the chilli!

How much does it cost? Pretty cheap – find a local to cook one up for you the traditional way and you’ll be in heaven.
