Yoko Ono’s Biggest-Ever Mural Has Popped Up In Washington D.C
Washington D.C’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has teamed up with Union Market, a local warehouse-style food market, to debut a large-scale public-art mural by prolific Japanese artist and peace advocate Yoko Ono.
Ono’s latest masterpiece, which reads “RELAX, YOUR HEART IS STORNGER THAN WHAT YOU THINK!” features original text across almost 100 square metres of the market’s north-eastern exterior wall.
“I hope our hearts will be stronger and stronger forever,” Ono said, explaining her inspiration for the work in a press release.
The appearance of the new mural coincides with the 10-year anniversary of Ono’s Wish Tree, a permanent installation in the museum’s year-round sculpture garden, where visitors are invited to tie a written wish to the tree.
The instillation of the mural was the inaugural project of Hirshhorn in the City, a new initiative that showcases contemporary art beyond the walls of the museum, connecting artists and overseers with the city’s creative community.
