The Capital City Most Aussies Want To Visit Is…

Australia really is a lucky country, with a wealth of diverse capital cities to visit and explore. You can go down south for some art and wine, head further north or west for some jaw dropping beaches, or settle in right at the top for a never ending summer.

It seems that we’re all becoming more aware of how great our big backyard is too, according to new research. The Roy Morgan Holiday Tracking Survey has been taking note of the domestic travel plans of Australians over the past ten years. Their findings show that in 2016, over 14.8 million Australians intended to spend a holiday in our home country over the next two years, up by 1.6 million people since the same survey was taken in 2006.

The survey also ranked all of the capital cities that Aussies would most like to visit, and the clear winner was – drum roll please – the Victorian capital of Melbourne. In 2006, Melbourne was also the favourite by far, with 3.2 million Australians expressing an interest to travel there. In 2016, interest in the ever-so-trendy, coffee-swilling, fashion capital of the country was just as strong, adding an extra one million prospective visitors.

Stirring a bit of more of that healthy Sydney/Melbourne rivalry is Sydney’s second place spot on the list, with an increase from 1.9 to 2.4 million Aussies wanting to visit over the last 10 years.

Interestingly, the number of Aussies wanting to visit Perth has declined from 1.7 million to 1.5 million, allowing the sunny city of Brisbane to overtake Perth’s place on the ladder, bagging the fourth spot with a prospective 1.8 million Aussie visitors.

While we think all of our capital cities are just as awesome as the other, it’s a shame to see Darwin cop the last spot, with only 1.1 million Australians hoping to visit. Especially since there’s so much cool stuff to do there. Oh well, it seems we have another 10 years to change people’s minds.
