The 7 Best Things To Do In Brisbane This March

Beware the idle hands of March! Not to be outdone by a festival-filled February, March steps up with plenty of events to keep you up to mischief in Brisbane.

#1 Memento mourning tea

Death-Cafe-event-image-1

Brisbane’s very own Death Fest, Death Café invites you to embrace the macabre and meet your maker over brunch in the Metro Arts Basement. Join Sarah Winch, author of Best Death Possible, and Hummingbird House’s Fiona Hawthorne in a freeform conversation around mortality, palliative care, grief and the experience of dying. Death Café runs from 11am on March 6 at Metro Arts.

#2 BCF: stand-ups, sits and giggles

Get your LOLs on IRL at Brisbane Comedy Festival, returning in 2016 with another month full of laughs. While it’s tough to whittle a shortlist from over 40 chuckle-worthy events, we recommend checking out Laura Davis’s fascinating Ghost Machine (best comedy: Melbourne Fringe 2015; best independent comedy: Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2015); international fave funny-man Danny Bhoy; all-singing, all-dancing, all-pop-culture-deconstructing femmo comedy Strong Female Character; Legally Brown-fame’s Nazeem Hussain’s Hussain in the Membrane; and don’t miss Tripod’s 20th anniversary best-of show, 101 Hits, a celebration of “the stupidest songbook ever to bluff its way into existence”. If you can’t make up your mind, regular Lucky Dip variety nights on the Rooftop Terrace will have a little something for everyone. Brisbane Comedy Festival makes its home at Brisbane Powerhouse from February 27 until March 23.

#3 Who run the world?

dance

4ZZZ teams up with No Lights No Lycra to bring groovers of all genders a special-edition International Women’s Day dance party. As usual, there are no teachers, no steps, no bright lights, and no pressure — just sick tunes and space to move. 4ZZZ programs this month’s girl-power playlist as part of Queensland Women’s Week celebrations. No Lights No Lycra costs $6 at the door and runs from 7 til 8pm on March 8.

#4 Stand back — we’re going to try science

Brisbane welcomes World Science Festival this month, with a huge program of films, lectures, workshops and virtual-reality experiences spread across Brisbane’s cultural centre precinct. Join Einstein’s inner circle at Dear Albert, an intimate performance that builds on the scientist’s personal correspondence; choose hard-science docos or sci-fi adventure with GoMA’s WSF film series; or become an apprentice for a day with workshops on palaeontology, game design, quantum physics, robotics and more. Of course, no Aussie science experience would be complete without a visit from trivia master and scientist Dr Karl. World Science Festival runs from March 9 to 13.

#5 Do not pass GO

go

Looking for a livelier brunch than Death Café? GO Lounge in Greenslopes is a café with a monopoly on over 300 board and table-top games. Pop in for $4 an hour or settle in for the day ($6/day weekdays; $12/day weekends) and order in: GO Lounge partners with local restaurants to bring you a menu of treats delivered straight to your table. Make yourself at home at 8/357 Logan Road in Greenslopes any day but Monday.

#6 Kiss and tell

Ruckus Slam hosts DATE NIGHT, a “slamtacular love-in” complete with kissing-booth, for its March performance event. Hit up the New Globe Theatre by 7pm for sign-up (you have two minutes of aural pleasure at the mic before you get dumped) or mosey in at 7.30pm to soak in the spoken-word love. Perhaps you’ll finally get your meet-cute at Brisbane’s electric monthly slam event. Make a Ruckus for $10 (on the door) on March 16.

#7 It’s LIVE!

apt8

The Asia Pacific Triennial (APT8) hosts another day-long program of free live events at Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art in the exhibition’s second-last month in action. Kick off your Sunday at 11am with a sound-based workshop from Super Critical Mass. In the afternoon, watch artists Gabriella and Silvana Mangano perform current news events through movement and sound in There is no there; join the curator of Contemporary Asian Art, Reuben Keehan, for a tour of APT8’s Japanese artworks; and finally take part in a live discussion of gender and sexuality in the context of performance art in the Asia Pacific region. APT Live takes over GoMA on March 20.
