If you’ve ever wanted to see a rendition of Othello or Macbeth at Shakespeare’s very own Globe Theatre, now’s your chance: from September, a full-scale replica of the iconic theatre will pop up in Melbourne to mark 400 years since The Bard passed on.
Pop Up Globe will painstakingly recreate the three-storey Globe, Down Under Edition, at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, with performances running for six weeks from September 21 to November 12, 2017.
On the bill are crowd favourites Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Othello, and Henry V, along with a specially commissioned new show Around the Globe in 60 Minutes!, all of which will boast elaborate sets, intricate costumes, and laugh-out-loud comedy.
The structure itself stands over 30m wide and weighs over 100 tonnes, while the unique circular design means the 900 guests who can fit inside will never be more than 15m from the action.
Early bird tickets are on sale now, starting at $54.93 for General Admission passes. Who said you’d never use that Shakespeare you studied at high school?
