You Can Spend The Day With A Rescue Puppy On This Tropical Island Full Of Dogs

Do “puppies” and “sunshine” both rank pretty highly on your list of interests? Well, this stunning tropical island and its canine inhabitants need your help.

On the island of Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, there’s a huge number of rescued dogs that need love, attention and adoption. The dogs in question are called Potcakes, a name given to local dogs of mixed breeds including Labradors, German shepherds and fox terriers. Just try to not let your heart melt into a puppy puddle when you look at them.

They’re a huge part of  the culture and history in Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas, but there simply aren’t enough humans to care for each and every Potcake in the country, meaning many of the dogs have ended up in shelters awaiting adoption.

Of course, most people on holidays aren’t in positions to adopt a dog, but now there’s a different way to help out. At the charity Potcake Place, volunteers can take dogs out for the day to supply some much-needed puppy love.

The shelter is in dire need of people to help socialise the Potcakes by taking them for walks on the beach, playing with them and getting them used to human interactions (ahem, cuddles). People can also help by fostering the pups or “couriering” them to their new owners (which is basically just a pooch road trip). Potcake Place also does shoutouts on its Facebook page for items they need donated, or dog enthusiasts can assist by donating a bit of money on their website.

Turks and Caicos is a great option for your next tropical island escape, so if you’re planning on travelling to this stunning part of the world, why not take a puppy break and hang out with an itty bitty Potcake? As Potcake Place say on their site: “We’ll give you everything you need, you just need to supply some TLC.”
