Melbourne Is Hosting Its First Ever Dachshund Race

OK, so it’s not the Race That Stops A Nation. It might not even be the Race That Stops A Street. But Melbourne’s famed Spring Carnival is about to get about 100 percent cuter thanks to the city’s first ever dachshund race.

A fixture on the Berlin calendar, where it’s been running for the past 35 years, Dachshund races oddly enough originated in Australia in the 1970s. And thanks to German restaurant Hophaus Bier Bar and pet supply store My Dachshund Online, they’re coming back.

The Hophaus Inaugural Dachshund Race will take place on Saturday, September 19 at the Podium Courtyard in Southgate (near St John’s Church). So what can you expect? A literal sausage fest of “flailing tongues, confused little hunds, good food, good bier and smiles all round”, according to the Hophaus blog. In addition to the race, there’ll be prizes for “Best Dressed Dachshund”, with all proceeds going to Dachshund Rescue Australia.

So why not transform your pooch into this very cool and somewhat terrifying dino dog?

Or maybe just the classic sausage dog (with a side of relish)?

Due to hight demand and limited places, registrations have filled up rather quickly, but head here for more details about the event.
